Jim Jefferson - Interview Q&A How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it? I have been in the mortgage industry since 1999. The thought of being able to help people fulfill the dream of owning a home was my biggest inspiration for entering the mortgage industry. Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have? I work with many experienced buyers, but also a growing group of first time buyers. The most common question from all clients is what product will work best for them to meet their budget for a home? My home buyers want options to make their mortgage as affordable as possible based on both their risk tolerance, and timeline of home ownership. How long have you been in the mortgage business? What awards have you won? I have been a Presidents Club producer since 2000, ranked among the Top 1% of mortgage originators in the Country with over $1B in funded volume in my career. What advice would you give new or first time home buyers? It is important first time buyers work with a very experienced Loan Officer the moment they are considering buying a home. If a first time Buyer consults with us about 12 months prior to purchasing their home we can insure they put themselves in the best financial position for their upcoming purchase. Reviewing credit requirements, conditions of employment, and down payment options well in advance of their first home purchase helps insure our buyer will be approved and obtain the best mortgage product and interest rate to meet their budget. What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it? The Underwriting process is definitely the most challenging part of the loan process. The documentation required can often seem overwhelming especially to first time buyers. We make this process much less overwhelming by setting expectations early in the mortgage application process. We thoroughly map out the steps of the loan process, and what documentation will be needed to verify income, assets, and anything unique to their specific loan. When our borrowers know “the why” for the documentation required early in the process it alleviates stress and creates a clear path for a great customer experience. Are you active in any fundraising organizations? What goals and/or success have you helped them achieve? I have been a donor for many years to the United Way and my local School Districts. We have had annual fund raisers that have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the United Way & our local schools. Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc. I grew up with my parents and one sister in Elmhurst Illinois, attending York high school and then later Illinois State University. I started out thinking I wanted to be a dentist, and follow in a couple of my family members’ footsteps. I then quickly found my calling was economics & business which became my majors in college. What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer? Helping my clients purchase their dream home is extremely satisfying, year after year. I would say I get the most reward out of helping Buyers that have had life challenges in the past achieve home ownership when they thought it couldn’t happen. That is when I really get to put my many years of experience to work. What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans? I enjoy playing golf with friends and spending time with my wife and four children. We all love the beach and try to plan family getaways to tropical destinations whenever we can. Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you? I always wanted to be in entertainment or broadcasting and love making people laugh. Even though my career took me in a very different direction I feel I am still able to be an entertainer of sorts while originating mortgages. I feel the ability to provide clients with industry expertise while making the process enjoyable and fun, is a great combination.
